Great Lakes Energy Lights Up Northern Michigan with Calix Vantage Services, AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge GPON, and Calix Whole Home Wi-Fi Solution

Ambitious fiber network project set to reach 125,000 members with gigabit speeds and whole home Wi-Fi services

PETALUMA, Calif., Aug. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced Great Lakes Energy Cooperative (GLE) has partnered with the Calix Services team to plan, deploy, and manage its network transformation. GLE has selected the Calix Vantage Support Service to accelerate its Truestream fiber network initiative that will bring advanced services, including gigabit internet, voice, and managed whole home Wi-Fi to its members in northern Michigan. The fiber network will expand over the next 8-10 years across GLE’s 26 county service area in western lower Michigan. By partnering with Calix, GLE expects to reduce its time to deploy new services and reduce deployment risk by leveraging the expertise and experience developed by the Calix team through hundreds of engagements with service providers.

As GLE builds its next generation network on the Calix AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System, the new Calix Vantage Support Service will help them quickly scale their operations. The Calix Professional Services team will also help GLE accelerate their network deployment through AXOS Enablement and Wi-Fi Enablement services. These services will support GLE’s whole-home and managed Wi-Fi services delivered through Calix GigaCenters, 804Mesh satellites, and Calix Support Cloud.

“Over 80 years ago, GLE was formed to provide critical electric service to rural areas that other utilities would not serve, and that tradition continues today as we introduce a world-class fiber network to our members,” said Bill Scott, Great Lakes Energy President and CEO. “As we seek to bridge the digital divide in our rural communities, we believe reliable energy and communications solutions will enhance our members’ quality of life and promote a more vibrant economy for all. We are excited to partner with Calix Services to help us launch, ramp and successfully manage our Truestream fiber network.”

Expanding on a foundation of excellent customer support and a member-first mission, GLE – under the Truestream brand - has embarked on a fiber network build to enhance the broadband experience for its members. GLE is also driving economic development by enabling work from home capabilities and local business expansion. Its next-generation GPON network will deliver high-performance applications such as video streaming, video conferencing, online education, telemedicine, and gaming. GLE will also benefit from new capabilities to monitor and maintain the electric system, respond to outages faster, and identify and deploy system upgrades. With construction already underway, GLE is pre-registering members in a limited area for service that begins later this year. GLE plans to offer new services to all of their 125,000 members upon completion of the fiber network.

To accelerate this service delivery timetable, GLE has engaged Calix to provide Vantage Support Services. Vantage is the premier support service offered by Calix and it is designed for service providers who want to solve problems faster and improve customer satisfaction without adding headcount. Vantage will provide:

  • The highest level of software and hardware support offered by Calix
  • Proactive, analytics driven network monitoring and management
  • A Vantage Service Director who will provide guidance on strategies to improve network performance and reliability

“We are proud to partner with GLE as it introduces advanced broadband services to underserved members who are eagerly anticipating all the benefits that these new services will deliver,” said Greg Billings, Calix senior vice president of services. “Calix Professional and Support Services are well suited for new broadband service providers like GLE who can leverage our network design, implementation, and support expertise to ramp deployment and deliver services faster to subscribers. By expanding their operational expertise through guidance from our experienced Calix network engineers, our Vantage Support Services help service providers lower risk, maintain brand integrity, and keep resources focused on growing their business.”
