After a two-year hiatus, the designer showcased his creations in Dubai as a prelude to Design One, Dubai. This was the flagship event of Sahachari Foundation, who for eight years have been putting together flash retail experiences in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Singapore. Manish Malhotra is the anchor designer for the Dubai edition - and he was obviously the right choice. A packed house, there was not one empty seat at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers - and with over 100 people standing, you could say Dubai was happy to welcome Manish back to the catwalk. And he gave them all the drama they expected.
After the show, Manish decoded this presentation and said, "With this collection you will see a marked departure from the traditional approach to bridal couture. These are drapes that can be worn in Mumbai or Milan." This 85-piece show included pieces from his recent couture, his Fall-Festive collections as well as some pieces especially tailored for Dubai. And be it the long trains, the oversized surface ornamentation, blinged out fringes, this was a collection for someone who wants to be the centre of attention. And while his cuts had its roots in Indian tradition, they were married with European couture silhouettes, so this collection had a cleaner and more contemporary feel, and proved that this designer is now thinking it is time to expand out of India. So we can expect to see more of Manish in Dubai, a city he calls his "second home".
