BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Whether you are a UAB basketball fan or a student that will one day walk across that graduation stage, many will have the chance to enjoy the upgrades coming to Bartow Arena.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees gave the project the greenlight Friday.

The board approved renovations and a $14.6 million budget.

Upgrades will include new floor level seating that is closer to the court, a lobby expansion, new club-level lounge, as well as concourse lighting and restrooms updates.

This was given unanimous approval, meaning UAB Athletics is now allowed to negotiate with an architect.

Leaders say this will make Bartow Arena stand out.

“The proposed project will support athletic programs, enhance the spectator experience, and create a comparable, competitive environment to other American Athletic Conference institutions,” said Mike Rodgers, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Construction Management.

This is something that was echoed by UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram.

“Our proposed renovations would make Bartow one of the most visible, accommodating and inviting basketball and volleyball venues in the American Conference,” Ingram said.

Pending UAB Athletics reaching fundraising goals, and more Board of Trustee approvals, these renovations should begin after UAB’s Spring 2026 Commencement ceremonies.
