Coatbridge MP calls for action on harmful impact of online influencers

Speaking in the House of Commons, Frank McNally pressed the Secretary of State on what steps are being taken to prevent social media algorithms from promoting dangerous and misogynistic content.

Frank McNally MP has called for urgent action to tackle the harmful impact of online influencers on children and young people.

Speaking in the House of Commons this week, the Coatbridge and Bellshill MP pressed the Secretary of State on what steps are being taken to prevent social media algorithms from promoting dangerous and misogynistic content.


Commenting after the exchange, Mr McNally said: “Parents across our communities are rightly concerned about the kind of content their children are exposed to online.


“It’s unacceptable that harmful and misogynistic material is being pushed into their feeds by algorithms designed to maximise clicks and views.

“We need stronger action from the government and tech companies to stop this at the source and protect young people from these dangerous influences.”

The government response acknowledged the growing concerns and outlined plans to work with tech companies and update health and relationship education in schools to better address these issues.

Mr McNally welcomed the response whilst emphasising that concrete measures are needed.

He added: “We can’t just talk about protecting children online; we need real, enforceable measures that make a difference. I will continue to push for stronger safeguards to ensure our digital spaces are safe for all young people.”
