Josh Onomah was once touted as a potential England international by Mauricio Pochettino and his potential Preston North End arrival has fulfilled Ryan Lowe's remaining transfer wish.

The midfielder had been strongly linked with a move to Deepdale and has seen his contract at Premier League side Fulham cancelled by mutual consent, allowing him to move on. Given he is a free agent, any deal does now not have to be concluded today but reports suggest the 25-year-old is undergoing a medical with North End.

Onomah came through the ranks at Tottenham under Pochettino and made 19 appearances in all competitions in the 2015-16 season. He made an instant impact, prompting the then Spurs manager to suggest an England call could come if his career continued at the same rate.

'Why not?" the Argentine said in December 2015 said on the prospect of Onomah playing for the Three Lions. "It is impossible to set the limit for him as he is 18 and is very strong. His quality is amazing and he only needs to work hard and then he'll be fine. He is a special boy, a special player, because of his talent, his potential and his body. His body is powerful and he has quality in his feet. I don't know how he will develop."

By his own admission the player struggled somewhat following his initial breakthrough into senior football and he spent time on loan at Aston Villa in 2017-18 and Sheffield Wednesday the following season. A move to Fulham followed and he has made more than 70 appearances for the Cottagers, helping them earn promotion to the Premier League last season.

But he has slipped down the pecking order since and is now seeking a new home and the chance to kickstart his career. Fulham chief Marco Silva believes the player will benefit from a change in environment but hailed his character and attitude.

He said: "I had a conversation with him at the end of last season and we decided together that it was important for him to go for many reasons. Last summer things didn’t work out well for him - getting more minutes elsewhere. He is a top lad, a great professional as well. Every training session he is there wanting to improve. Some games he has come on this season, but he needs more minutes in his legs and it is important for him to go."

His new home is now North End and his arrival ticks the one remaining box boss Lowe was looking for this month. PNE have already added loan stars Tom Cannon and Liam Delap to their ranks but additional attacking output from midfielder has also been on the manager's radar, something Onomah could provide.

Discussing the prospect of adding one more play to his squad this month, Lowe, speaking after the FA Cup defeat to Spurs at the weekend, said: "It will hopefully be an attacking player, whatever that looks like. Someone who can play in the eights; someone who can play just off the strikers, or with the strikers."
