Enquirer names Cincinnati high school athletes of the week for May 13

In a vote that ended May 13, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through May 9.

The winter 2022 certificates have been mailed and should have arrived at athletic departments. The spring certificates are in production but won't be mailed to close to the end of the month.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to mlaughman@enquirer.com.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Send your nominations by Monday morning for this week's high school sports action.

The winners are:

Ohio boys spring team of the week: La Salle baseball – The Lancers jumped over the .500 mark after beating St. Xavier twice and plus a 15-7 win over Colerain.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys spring team of the week: Ryle baseball – The Raiders went 3-0, beating Simon Kenton 13-9, Holy Cross 8-7 and Danville 2-1.

Ohio girls spring team of the week: St. Ursula softball – On May 7, went 3-0 in a tripleheader, beating Princeton 7-1, Batavia 7-2 and Winton Woods 19-1.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls spring team of the week: Notre Dame track and field – Notre Dame scored 93 points to edge Dixie Heights and Ryle to finish atop the NKAC Division I meet.

Ohio big school baseball player: Eddie Tanner, Talawanda – The freshman went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in the Braves’ 11-3 win over Northwest May 4.

Ohio small school baseball player: Vlad Johns, Cincinnati Country Day – The junior tossed five shutout innings in a win over state-ranked Toledo Ottawa Hills in the PBR Spring Showcase May 7. He also fired four shutout relief innings to get the win over Norwood May 4.

Northern Kentucky baseball player: Brayden Rouse, East Central – The sophomore had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI in a 5-3 conference win by the Trojans over South Dearborn.

Boys big-school lacrosse: Roman Wilburn, Loveland – The senior had 7 goals and 2 assists to go with 2 ground balls in the 28-3 win over Walnut Hills May 2. In a 23-3 win over Lebanon, he had 3 goals, 2 assists and a ground ball. Added to those stats were 3 goals in the 12-4 win over Milford May 6.

Boys small-school lacrosse: Will Saxby, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy – He had 7 goals, 3 assists, 2 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers in the 24-1 win over Madeira May 7. He also had 3 goals and 4 assists in the 20-3 win over Talawanda May 4.

Girls big-school lacrosse: Taylor Cox, Mount Notre Dame – She had 4 goals, 5 caused turnovers, 1 draw control, and 8 groundballs in MND’s 14-4 win over Summit Country Day May 5. She also had 3 goals, 1 assist, 2 ground balls, 3 draw controls and 3 caused turnovers in the 16-8 win over Seton. Last Monday, May 2, she also had 2 goals and an assist in the 19-3 win over Mercy McAuley.

Girls small-school lacrosse: Alexis Veldhuis, Seven Hills – She had 5 goals, 2 assists, 2 ground balls, 4 draw controls and 3 caused turnovers in the 7-3 win over Chaminade-Julienne.

Northern Kentucky lacrosse: Liam Wainscott, Covington Catholic – The senior recorded his 400th career save in a win over Bryan Station May 6.

Ohio big school softball player: Madi Fugate, Milford – The junior went 7-for-9 with two doubles, four RBI and six runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Anderson May 5.

Ohio small school softball player: Annie Katuska, Seven Hills – The freshman went 3-for-4 with a triple and two home runs and eight RBI in Seven Hills’ 11-0 win over Purcell Marian May 4.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball player: Payge Callahan, East Central – She had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two in a key 11-8 win over conference foe South Dearborn, then three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in one of two conference wins over Rushville May 7.

Singles tennis player: Julian Guitron, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy– He won at first singles over his Highland opponent May 5.

Doubles tennis team: John Laskey-Jacob Clifton, Highlands – The first doubles team beat their CHCA opponent in a 4-1 team loss May 5. They also beat their Newport Central Catholic opponent

Ohio boys big-school track and field athlete: Trevor Billingsley, Wilmington – The senior won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races at the Lebanon Invitational May 4.

Ohio boys small-school track and field athlete: Nico Arraje, Wyoming – The junior won the 800- and 1,600-meter races at the Best of the West meet May 5.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete: Zachary Noonchester, Bellevue – The senior helped lead the team in the NKAC Division III runner-up by scoring first place in the 300 and 110 hurdles, second in the 4-x-100 and third in the 4-x-400 earning 26 points for the team.

Ohio girls big-school track and field athlete: Kristen Berwanger, Mercy McAuley – The freshman won the discus event at the Best of the West May 5 and took second in the shot put. She also won the discus at the Blue Heaven Invitational May 4.

Ohio girls small-school track and field athlete: Tabbi Courts, Bethel-Tate – She won the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump at the Mariemont Invitational May 4.

Northern Kentucky girls track and field athlete: Ella Goetz, Notre Dame – The freshman won the discus and shot put at the NKAC Division I track meet May 5.

Boys volleyball: Tyler Weller, Oak Hills – Weller reached double-digit kills in three of his four matches, including a season-high 19 kills in a 3-1 win against Hamilton.
