Slack banning users with links to Iran, says complying with US sanctions

Slack is now banning Iranians and others who are visiting Iran from its platform. It says it is complying with US sanctions on Iran after updating its geolocation system.

Earlier last month, Slack users began reporting the real-time messaging app had sent a message notifying them that they had been banned from the service. The reasoning given to these banned users is U.S. economic sanction laws and regulations, watch the complete report from AJplus,

Slack is a cloud-based set of proprietary team collaboration tools and services, founded by Stewart Butterfield. It began as an internal tool used by his company, Tiny Speck, in the development of Glitch. The name is an acronym for “Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge”.

Slack offers many IRC (Internet Relay Chat)-like features, including persistent chat rooms (channels) organized by topic, private groups and direct messaging. All content inside Slack is searchable, including files, conversations, and people.

Direct messages allow users to send private messages to a specific user rather than a group of people. Direct messages can include up to nine people (the originator plus eight people). Once started this direct message group can be converted to a private channel.

Slack provides a mobile application for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone (beta), in addition to their web browser client and electron desktop clients for macOS, Windows, and Linux (beta).
