No need to camp out waiting for it

Nintendo’s new mobile game is now available to download in the UK, even though it wasn’t supposed to be out till tomorrow.

Update:

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is now on the iOS App Store as well, so everyone in the UK can download it and you don’t have to worry about using the Japanese or Australian version.

Original story:

The mobile version of Animal Crossing is already out on Android, and free to download from the Google Play Store.

According to Nintendo it wasn’t supposed to be out until Wednesday, although it’s been available in Australia for weeks now. It’s not out on iOS yet though, so you may have to wait until tomorrow for that.

Pocket Camp was announced last month, after years of people saying that Animal Crossing on smartphone should be a no-brainer for Nintendo.

That means of course that it has microtransactions, but that seems understandable given Nintendo’s attempt to do without them, with Super Mario Run, proved surprisingly unpopular.

Not only did it underperform but many smartphone users flat-out refused to pay a flat fee for the game.

By comparison Fire Emblem Heroes, which does feature microtransactions, has done a lot better. Although it’s pretty generous about not really needing to pay anything, and it sounds like Pocket Camp is as well.

As you might gather, the game puts you in charge of a camp site, rather than overseeing a whole village, but otherwise seems to work in the same way as the regular Animal Crossing games.

There’s still no clue as to whether there’ll be an Animal Crossing title for the Switch, but the smart money has got to be on a reveal next year – or perhaps even at The Game Awards event next month.
